Easy hike to St.Mary's Glacier

A few weekends ago we headed up the mountains for what promised to be "an easy hike." We went to St.Mary's Glacier, a compacted ice field from winter snow. It's not a long hike, and the lake is stunning. We all threw on light jackets and pants over our regular clothes (it's chilly up there, even in the summer months!) and headed up the trailhead. The trails were crowded, steep, and very rocky. Even though its a short hike (about a mile), its difficult to get good footing at times if you're not an experienced hiker or have small folk along. With that being said, I definitely recommend this as a family hike- our 4yo did the whole thing going up by herself but was slower than some of the people on trails around us, and noticed things they didn't because of it (lovely spots off trail, nuts, fallen tree trunks, bunnies, feathers, pretty mossy trees).

If you're doing this hike with children, I suggest you bring a backpack carrier such as the Ergo Carrier or Kelty Kids, good shoes on their feet, plenty of snacks, sweaters, and drinking water.

Getting There: Take I-70 West from Denver, past the town and three exits of Idaho Springs. Take the next exit marked "Fall River Road". Just past the bottom of the ramp, take a right (north) on Fall River Road. Follow this road up past the town of Alice on a very winding back road straight up to one of two parking areas for the clearly marked trailhead to St. Mary's Glacier.

The glacier itself gets a good bit of traffic (snowboarders, climbers, dogs, etc) but we stuck to climbing the rocks in the trail and playing in the lake. The hike was plenty dog friendly and fun for all of us but rather busy.

Halloween is almost here!!

I love Halloween. When I was little, we never celebrated it. But as a mom myself, I enjoy decorating for, preparing treats for, and especially, making costumes for Halloween.
Teylor wants to be a "Pirate Prarie Dog" this Halloween. I'm not sure how I'm pulling that one off yet, but I WILL try!
And I've been making costumes for my friends-there are pirate costumes, dinosaur costumes, animal tails, and a fairy costume happening. I love making costumes because they just *feel* magical somehow.
Last year we were all the Three Bears (that was really fun& memorable!) the year before that, we dressed up as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Teylor was the CUTEST special agent ever.

What are your kids going as this year?

Welcome!!

Hi there! I guess I should introduce myself. I am Violet, late 20's bi mama to one very precocious human 4yo named Teylor, mama to one very furry 9yo Lab mix dog named Oreo, and partner to one very gorgeous human named Mr.T. (We are also currently fostering a cute pup named Grace who you might see in some of my pics!)
We are a super fun in a crunchy-dirty-hippie sort of way, we like our honey local and our daughter still hasn't weaned. We moved to Colorado this summer from the South. We miss our iced tea, warm weather, and the way people drive (sometimes). We don't miss Palmetto bugs (google them...), mosquitos, hurricanes, or the bible belt.
This will be a blog about our adventures here in Colorado as we enjoy all the things this beautiful state has to offer!

Test Post

This is only a test! A test to see how my blog looks with something written here instead of just airspace. If I were more clever, perhaps I would craft a paragraph or two to detail my awesomeness the way Chipotle does on the sides of their bags.
